Paul (1979-1983)

1. What does this past Kansas debater look like now?



2. What does this ex-debater now do for a living?

Paul is a debate coach for Cornell University. I'm not 100% sure of his current responsibilities. Maybe this?

Previously, he was an attorney in Wichita, KS. Apparently, he worked at Snow Hodge & Edwards.

3. Has this former debater been "in the news"?

Sort of. Paul received a "write-in" vote for District Judge and another for District Attorney in the Sedgwick County (KS) elections, November 2, 2004.

4. What else do we know?

Previously, Paul was a graduate debate assistant for Wake Forest.

He's also still a smoker.

Geoff (1979-1983)

1. What does this past Kansas debater look like now?



2. What does this ex-debater now do for a living?

Geoff is a lawyer in Kansas City. He helps make sure small businesses get paid.

3. Has this former debater been "in the news"?

Apparently.

In connection with the celebration of Law Day USA on May 1, The Missouri Bar recently offered newspapers a free series of articles written by lawyers about the laws applying to corporations and everyone affected by them.

Geoff's article was on his specialization: "Businesses Looking to Maximize Revenues Need to Monitor Their Credit and Collection Procedures."

4. What else do we know?

Geoff misses his dog.

Apparently, Geoff speaks Greek!

David (1980-1984)

1. What does this past Kansas debater look like now?



2. What does this ex-debater now do for a living?

David recently worked as a tutor at the Community College of Denver Online Writing Lab. I'm not sure how well the Socratic method worked in that format.

Currently, David is a legal assistant for Eggers & Zimmerman, Law & Mediation practice in Salina, Kansas.

Sometimes, he describes himself as a typist.

3. Has this former debater been "in the news"?

Do listserves count? David is often an active participant on eDebate and many of his posts concern public policy issues and figures.

4. What else do we know?

David is a beat poet, published widely on the 'net. He is included in the NoneList Anthology, for both his poetry and his prose.

David follows the NBA and is a Celtics fan.

And then there's this, which has something to do with David's infatuation with Melanie. Whoever that is.

At least I understand this part of it:

...a scratch [in a vinyl album] ain't so bad cuz it connects you to the soul of the party it was scratched at...

Amen to that.

He is President and Founder of ZGrant, LLC, which is a "boutique sponsorship marketing practice dedicated to serving" its "clients and partners quietly and effectively."

Unless you are ready to talk about a couple of million bucks, don't call.

3. Has this former debater been "in the news"?

It "wouldn't be prudent" to say.

4. What else do we know?

As recently as 2002, Zac was still involved with the promotion of women's golf -- and Chick-fil-A.

Zac's slogan? "All achievement begins at play."

That sounds like Zac.

Eric

Eric is the one on the right.

2. What does this ex-debater now do for a living?

Eric is a lawyer for the Snohomish Washington Public Utility District.

3. Has this former debater been "in the news"?

You could say that. This is from the San Francisco Chronicle, June 27, 2004:

Eric Christensen unearthed Grandma Millie.

The soft-spoken, mild-mannered lawyer for a publicly owned utility in northwest Washington, Christensen also dug up “Burn, baby, burn.” And “He steals money from California to the tune of about a million (a day).” And “I got three more hours to congest.” And a host of other explosive and incriminating discussions from traders at the energy giant Enron.

"Wow, these guys are really crooked bastards," said Snohomish lawyer Eric Christensen.

Check out Eric's press clippings: CNN, the Washington Post, CBS News, USA Today, etc. And, of course, US Representative Jay Inslee (D-Wash) is a fan.

4. What else do we know?

Eric's boss, PUD General Counsel Mike Gianunzio, likes him:

"Eric is pretty much an unsung, quiet guy who's willing to work very hard. He works in the weeds and digs the dirt out," his boss said. "If we hadn't done this stuff, we basically would have had to pay Enron, and they would have gotten away with that fraud."

In 1999, Eric publicly blasted a mining company's "consigliere" for advocating "environmentally destructive corporate welfare."

Mark (1979-1983)

2. What does this ex-debater now do for a living?

Mark is an anti-trust lawyer in Washington, DC. Specifically, he is a partner for White & Case LLP.

3. Has this former debater been "in the news"?

This is from the National Review Online, November 4, 2000:

"The debate community is a very tight-knit community," says Mark Gidley, a former University of Kansas debater. "You spend 40 to 60 hours a week on it, going to tournaments 16 times a year that run from Thursday to Sunday, and you do this for a couple of years. You see the same people over and over."

The point of this story was to finger Al Gore advisor Mark Fabiani for helping to leak then-candidate George W. Bush's DUI. A former Bates debater, Tom Connolly, revealed the arrest to the national media and NRO wanted to know if Connolly and Fabiani knew each other from college debate.

4. What else do we know?

Mark wrote this to the Federal Trade Commission, January 5, 2000:

"Protecting individual privacy is one of the greatest challenges we face going into this new era of web-based flow of information."

Ironic, eh?
